Valley of Fires Recreation Area

Valley of Fires Recreation AreaLocated near Carrizozo which is about 60 miles north of Alamogordo and 90 miles west of Roswell. This recreation area is adjacent to the Malpais Lava Flow. The lava flow is considered to be one of the youngest lava flows in the continental United States. The flow is 4-6 miles wide, 160 feet thick and covers 125 square miles. The Malpais Nature Trail is fully accessible and is paved. The trail leads you into the lava flow and has interpretive displays. There are flowers, cactus, trees and bushes typical of a desert as well as roadrunners, lizards, cottontails, and mule deer. It is a great place to see birds as well. Great horned owls, burrowing owls, turkey vultures and golden eagles are just some of the birds you might see. There are also 19 campsites, two are wheelchair accessible.

Chaco Culture National Historical Park

Chaco Culture National Historical ParkLocated in northwestern New Mexico. This park has the densest and most exceptional concentration of pueblos in the American Southwest. Stop at the Visitor Center before taking the 9-mile paved road that gives access to 5 major sites. There are self-guided trails at each site. You should allow 45 min to an hour to explore each site. There are 4 backcountry hiking trails that access more remote sites.
