Located about 6 miles west of Washington DC directly across the river from the Lincoln Memorial. This military cemetery was established during the Civil War. There are many special monuments and memorials located here including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, President John F. Kennedy’s gravesite and the eternal flame, the Space Shuttle Challenger Memorial, Rough Riders Monument, Battle of the Bulge Memorial, Nurses Memorial, Pan Am Flight 103 Memorial and the Civil War Unknowns Monument which was the first memorial here to be dedicated to soldiers who had died in battle and who could not be identified. Take time to watch the elaborate ritual of the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that occurs daily on the hour.
Located in Luray which is about 30 miles northeast of Harrisonburg in northern Virginia. Discovered in 1878, this is the largest series of caverns in the East. Tours are given daily along well-lighted, paved walkways. Some of the rooms have ceilings that are 10-stories high and are filled with towering stone columns, crystal clear pools and formations of translucent calcite. Double Column, at 47 feet is the tallest column and one of the most spectacular formations in the caverns. The Great Stalacpipe Organ is the world’s largest musical instrument and makes music by gently tapping the stalactites. While you are visiting the cave, stop at the Luray Valley Museum and discover the history of the Shenandoah Valley, the garden maze, the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, the Luray Singing Tower that has a carillon of 47 bells, the Toy Town Junction, try one of the 3 ropes courses at the Rope Adventure Park or try your hand at prospecting at the Gem Sluice.
