The first successful sustained powered flights in a heavier-than-air machine were made here by Wilbur and Orville Wright on December 17, 1903. A 60-foot granite monument dedicated in 1932, is perched atop 90-foot tall Kill Devil Hill commemorating the achievement of these two visionaries from Dayton, Ohio.
The visitor center houses exhibits which are available year-round and include reproductions of their wind tunnel, the 1902 glider and the 1903 Flyer. Reproductions of the original Wright camp buildings are a two minute stroll from the visitor center. Adjacent to the camp buildings are granite markers which designate the lengths of the four successful powered flights.
Regularly scheduled presentations are conducted by park rangers each day. Each year the anniversary of the first successful flights is commemorated during special events at the park on December 17. National Aviation Day is celebrated on August 19 (Orville Wright's birthday).
